About SK Smith

I am excited to tell you that after I graduate from Berry College in the Spring, I will be taking a gap year to serve as an urban missionary with Love Thy Neighborhood! This ministry recruits young adults like me to serve and love people who are hurting in the inner-city of Louisville, KY. I will be living and serving with other urban missionaries beginning in September 2023 through August 2024. Partnered with the local church and 20 other non-profit ministries, we’re committed to impacting our neighbors’ lives with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

LTN matches each urban missionary with one of their partner ministries to tangibly meet the needs of the urban community. I will be ministering to women in the adult entertainment industry by doing outreach, discipleship, and career development through a non-profit called Scarlet Hope. Outreach looks like bringing hot meals to the women in their dressing rooms and getting to know them as human beings made in the image of God, listening to their stories, and sharing the good news that they are loved and cherished by their creator. Discipleship involves providing support to women through various avenues such as community and care. Career development aids women in gaining personal and professional development such as job training and employment.

This is a very exciting opportunity for me; as you may or may not know, I have felt God calling me to work in some capacity with the incarcerated community. With this long-term mission in mind, I have been looking to faithfully follow the Lord in his next steps after graduation for my life. While I will not go into all the details of the process of discernment here (you can ask me another time about that journey!), LTN has presented itself as one of these next faithful steps to following God’s call. This program will help me gain tools for ministering to the least, the lost, and the lonely as I serve with Scarlet Hope, a ministry which serves a population that is close to and overlaps with the incarcerated community. There is also a slight chance that LTN will start a partnership with a prison ministry, in which I would switch my service site to gain more direct experience with the incarcerated.

I will be serving with Scarlet Hope for 20-30 hours every week. As a member of LTN, I will be required to spend 15 hours a week in community service to my neighbors, building relationships and sharing the love of Christ. Another 15 hours a week will be spent participating in a mandatory curriculum that focuses on personal spiritual growth. This internship will strengthen my faith in Christ while also growing my life skills and relational maturity. I’ll have the opportunity to both serve people in need and also gain professional work skills. LTN’s mission is to disciple Christians to serve their neighbors, cultivate healthy relationships and follow Jesus in their culture and context, and I feel honored to be accepted as a part of this ministry.

I could use your support in many different ways!! First and foremost, I would greatly appreciate your prayer as I prepare and step into this next season of life. I am not expecting this to be easy, but as one of my good friends likes to remind me, “Good things are rarely easy”. I would love prayer for confidence and humility as I step into a new community and place of service. I desire to grow in my relationships with others and God throughout this time. Another way to support me is financially; LTN works on a support-raising system where each member raises support to fund their year. My goal is to raise $11,900, the cost of the year-long program for one individual. Your funding helps provide housing, food, transportation, retreats, training, etc. Lastly, a way you could support me is through connecting me to others who you think would also want to support me in this upcoming year! Names and contact information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! For those wanting to support me through prayer and potentially financially, once I start the program, I will be sending monthly update letters to share the good news of what God is doing through me in this program, so stay tuned! Thank you for considering supporting me in prayer, financial support, and connections! If you want to chat about what it might look like for you to support me or just want to know more about what my time at LTN will look like feel free to give me a call at 770-713-2316 or send me an email at sksmith246@gmail.com.
