About Mary Grace Donaldson
AUGUST 1 UPDATE
By the Lord's grace, I have exceeded my personal fundraising goal of $2,700!! Thank you SO much for being a part of this summer. All funds over my 100% mark will help my fellow housemates and coworkers reach their goals so that Love Thy Neighborhood can continue to provide incredible nonprofit internships and solid Christian teaching and community to college-aged men and women.
JULY 23 UPDATE
I have less than 3 weeks left here. Working at the Louisville Rescue Mission has been so impactful. I go to Thrift 'n' Thrive every day, a thrift store that directly benefits LRM financially. Also, Thrift 'n' Thrive supports the men in the Life Change program at LRM by giving them a place to learn job skills as they complete the first stage of the program.
So, every day, several LC guys and me pile in a fifteen passenger van and drive to Thrift 'n' Thrive. The van rides bring us together, mundane commutes that allow for uninterrupted conversation. Most of the guys don't love going to the store, but they decided to join the LRM program because they wanted a better life for themselves. So they come. We laugh a lot, and we talk about life, theology, parenting, addictions.
A few of the LC guys started a tradition a month or two ago: Saturday morning sunrises at the walking bridge. It's a sacred piece of the morning. They dub it the "Sunrise Club."
A few of us interns meet several of the LC guys at the steps of the Rescue Mission around 5:30, while it's still dark. And we begin the beautiful walk under a dark blue sky, a mile to the walking bridge. If you come, you have to bring something to read for the group. We breathe in the fresh morning air over the water, and a few of the guys pull out a cigarette. We watch the sky lighten. We read, we watch still, we rejoice in the beauty.
W, C, and J are the founding members. They are the kind of guys who revel in the majestic and weep at the sorrowful. The sunrise is their delight. I don't always love the early mornings, but I learn to love in different ways by coming. The sunrise reveals hope for the day. All of us can rest in hope in our Savior for how he redeems us and heals our brokenness.
I am so excited for this summer! Having just finished my sophomore year at Covenant College studying Sociology, Linguistics, and Community Development, I am thrilled to intern with the Louisville Rescue Mission, through a non-profit called Love Thy Neighborhood (LTN). LTN is a Christian organization which facilitates missional internships in many different sectors of work in Louisville. I have accepted an internship position on the Homelessness Track. The Louisville Rescue Mission ministry provides over 10,000 loads of free laundry per year, can store over 350 pieces of luggage for people living on the streets, is a mailing address for over 2,000 people, and provides long term rehabilitation programming. This ministry shares the gospel at every level of their work and seeks for each guest to know Christ personally. I will be leaving for Louisville on May 29, and I will return home on August 8. I am excited to be a part of what God is doing in this ministry.
As a Sociology major with a Community Development minor, I expect this internship to be incredibly insightful regarding my plans post-college. I am very interested in non-profit work as a way to love those who are different from me. I am so thankful that the Lord has provided this opportunity for both discernment and personal growth.
I would love for you to be a part of my journey this summer. As a Love Thy Neighborhood Team Member, my goal is to raise $2,700 to cover 3 months of service ($900 per month) to cover the cost of housing, groceries, transportation, training, curriculum, etc. My school has already been incredibly generous to me. Covenant has contributed significantly toward this learning experience, both for my Sociology degree and in my leadership program. In addition, I am so thankful for the contributions of family and friends. I only need to raise $125 more for the summer. If you would like to give financially, even a small amount, I would be more than grateful. Any excess amount donated will go to other interns fundraising for LTN this summer.
Regardless of your financial involvement, I would also greatly appreciate your prayer for this experience. I expect the summer to be extremely challenging and growing, both relationally and spiritually. Working with the homeless and people who have experienced much struggle in their lives will give me insight into my walk as a Christian and how I interact with those around me. Please pray with me that the Lord would equip me to serve well, and that I would be strengthened in my relationship with Him both through my preparation and during my time in Louisville.
Thank you so much for contributing to my experience, whether through finances, prayer, or both. If you would like to hear more about my summer, or if you are interested in receiving monthly newsletter updates from me during my summer in Louisville, please email me at email@example.com. I am so thankful for your involvement in my life as I look forward to this summer!

To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8
